Does recycled material in a windsurf sail mean compromising on performance or durability?
Our answer was clear from the start: No.
When we began using recycled materials in our sails, we did not want to create an alternative that felt different on the water or lasted less. Our standards remained the same:
Performance you can rely on. Quality that lasts.
The difference lies in the material – not in what you can expect on the water.

FROM PET BOTTLES TO SAIL MATERIAL
The film material used in our Recycled sails is made from 100% recycled PET.
Used PET bottles are collected, sorted and processed. The recovered material is turned into new granulate, which is then used to produce high-quality film material for our sails. This gives existing PET a new purpose instead of producing the required plastic from new fossil resources.
Depending on the sail size, around 10 PET bottles are recycled per square metre of sail area. At the same time, approximately 400 g of CO₂ can be saved per square metre during material production.

DOES IT REALLY FEEL THE SAME ON THE WATER?
This is where the real development work began. Recycled film material has slightly different stretch characteristics from the material used in our regular models. Simply replacing the material and calling the result “Recycled” was therefore never an option for us.
Instead, we specifically adjusted the alignment of the fibres in the X-Ply and Square-Ply areas. This balances the forces acting on the sail and compensates for the different stretch characteristics.
The development goal was clear:
Same shape. Same Handling. Same Performance.

The result: The RE-SEAL feels like the SEAL on the water, and the RE-TORRO like the TORRO.

RECYCLED DOESN’T MEAN LESS DURABLE
We have been using recycled materials in our sails since 2022. Our standards for quality and durability are just as high as they are for our conventional sail materials.
Every batch of material must pass our quality control before it becomes part of a GUNSAILS sail. Material that does not meet our requirements is not used.
