Our new 4 batten Compact Wave sail is ready for its second season. The Seal continues to embody uncompromising wave characteristics: absolutely neutral when riding waves, precise ON/OFF in combination with exactly the right amount of power.
With the new arrangement of Square Ply and multidirectional X-Ply in the upper part of the sail, the Seal is not only lighter but also more stable in its pressure point. This improves the overall handling of the sail and the profile stability during maneuvers. With this unique balance and thanks to the slightly set back pressure point, the sail provides the necessary drive on demand.
The Kevlar Warp Line in the main window additionally supports the Radical Wave capability of the sail. Two unidirectional Kevlar threads absorb the extreme forces, support the profile and ensure long term consistent riding characteristics.
The mast curve of the small sizes has been adjusted to further stabilize the profile even under extreme conditions. This keeps the Seal light and controllable even in high winds.
Thus the Seal 2019 delivers all the characteristics of a radical wave sail, but still remains the playful wave all-rounder with a wide wind range.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - F.R.E.D.

F.R.E.D. will help you to fi nd the optimal luff trim for your sail. The mark is found in the upper sail window and serves as an orientation point to create the perfect luff tension (loose leech).

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Top Guard

The large reinforcement at the sail top avoids abrasion and wearing out whilst rigging.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Vario Top

The top opening is enlarged for an easier mast insertion. The adjustment buckle is placed behind the mast; unnecessary webbing can be stowed in the top opening.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Mini Battens

Lightweight mini battens take control of the leech while twisting and avoid detrimental leech fl utter. In this way, the window fabrics are spared and the longevity of the sail is predefined.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Batten Guard

PVC tabs on the upper batten pockets prevent wearing out and abrasion whilst rigging.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Internal Trim Batten

The Internal Trim Batten system is completely integrated into the batten pocket and the battens can stay tensioned in the sail. The profi led end piece offers additional protection against abrasion.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Pocket Guard

A PVC braid, sewed on the bottom batten pocket, protects your sail from abrasion while uphauling and waterstarting.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Reduced Boom Length

The Reduced Boom Length design shortens the boom length. The handling is much easier and feels more compact. The sail control is signifi cantly improved. A shorter boom is generally stiffer and will assist in maintaining the sail stability and profile.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Offset Clew

The Wave sails are equipped with 2 clew eyelets which are set asymmetrically for individual tuning:

Upper eyelet for more power
Lower eyelet for more control

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Trim Setting

The boom length is printed beside the clew. The mast lenght is patched on the mast protector.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Boom Position Control

The printed height scale at the boom opening helps you to easily remember your personal boom position.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Double Lock Seams

Double seams form the most stable connection between individual panels and different materials. They are used in stress zones as well as in areas of high tension and make your sail robust and durable.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Foot Guard

All seams in the significantly stressed foot area are protected by Dacron coverings. A PVC edging from foot to the first batten protects the leech edge against your board’s nonslip coating.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Comfort Pulley

The integrated triple pulley has large easy turning stainless brass rolls which greatly reduce the effort required for sail trimming. Also, if you prefer, the rolls are removable to allow the use of standard downhaul pulley hooks.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Sleeve Volumer

The GUNSAILS logo that is sewn on the sleeve keeps it open at the boom opening area like a clip and thus mast insertion is much easier.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Strap On

For very easy packing away and storage: Just roll the sail up and fix the elastic retainer.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Mesh Pocket

On the inside of the protector you will find a closable mesh pocket which can hold e.g. your downhaul surplus.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Mast Foot Protector

The large mast foot protector can be pulled back whilst rigging. The loop eases the initial pulling down of the sail. The uphaul can be comfortably inserted through an opening in the protector.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Intelligent Material Assembly

The well designed combination of different materials allows weight savings without losing stability. By varying the stretch behaviour of the individual materials, we can precisely define each sail profile under pressure and guarantee you consistent sailing characteristics over the long term.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Tension Frame

The Tension frame forms a functional unit with the smart clew construction. It is built from multidirectional x-ply and framed with insignia. Therefore it can resist maximum stress levels. The Tension frame receives the force from the clew and distributes the tension with the additional warp lines into the sail. The layout of the tension frame is designed to support the individual profile of every sail. Conclusively the tension frame improves the response of the sail and increases the profile stability. It also ensures long lasting sail characteristics and improves the overall durability of the sail.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Double Lock Seams

Double Seams provide the most stable connection between panels or different materials. They find use in areas of high material tension and make your sail tough and durable.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Smart Clew Construction

The Smart Clew Construction is based on the tension specific and precise alignment of different materials. The result is an extremely durable clew area without additional weight. Depending the sail the layout of the materials varies in order to suit the resulting tension lines in order to distribute the force from the clew, towards the Tension Frame into the sail. That helps to create more response, better profile stability and long lasting sail characteristics.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Kevlar Stretch Control

Through the selected use of kevlar warp laminate, we are able to precisely define the stretch properties of every sail. This leads to more response and a long lasting and stable sail profile. The light and unidirectional kevlar threads show very low stretch, even under highest loads. They are individually positioned in each sail to suit its range of application, leading to long lasting performance and sail characteristics.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Multidirectional X-Ply

Multidirectional X-Ply is used in high stress areas. The thread layout shows a higher density of polyester yarn, thus making the material more resistant than the regular X-Ply. The additional vertical thread direction allows the material to take more tension and force in the critical tension line.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Square-Ply

The square ply is based on the same concept as X-ply material. However the threads are aligned in a 90 degree angle and the material offers a higher overall thread density. That allows us to reduce the thickness of the included monofilm to save weight, but ensure durability at the same time.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - X-Ply

X-PLY the all time classic of the reinforced laminates. It is light, stable and has a good transparency. Therefore it is used in the window area of the Wave-and Cross Over Sails. X-Ply also does withstand higher punctual stress. In case of a cut, the threads avoid further damage because they stop the cut from spreading through the window.

SURF MAGAZIN 1-2 2019 / SEAL 4.2 2019

GUNSAILS | Testbericht Seal 2019 Surf Magazin

Amazement at the first check on land: A seal with a flat profile and almost straight standing battens? With the first pump it is clear: By no means! Behind the GUNSAILS hides the most powerful engine of the test group! The wide Dacron luff panel gives the sail damping, over the mast pocket draws a deep profile in the sail, which brings the award for the "Planing Machine of the Year" to Saarbrücken. The Seal always gives enough absorption to cushion gusts and chops but acts never spongy in the hands of heavy surfers. The control is at the top level - just trim until the Loose Leech reaches the FRED mark and then pull at the boom with only moderate pull. Rerigging is omitted almost complete thanks to the good wind range in one trim, the Gun is convincing here too. With its powerful characteristic, it is understandable, that one has to make a cut when it comes to its neutrality in the turn and in maneuvers, here the Seals seems to be a bit bulky and not very agile in the direct comparison.

SURF CONCLUSION: Early planing, controllable, stable and with a great trim range - the Seal delights everyone who wants an uncomplicated power sail for strong winds in shallow water, in bump & jump conditions or for small Baltic waves. As a neutral off-sail for waves or to practice ambitious freestyle maneuvers, the sail lacks a bit lightness - a feeling less related to the weight on the scale than to the location of the pressure point and profile allocation.

GUNSAILS | Testbericht SEAL 2019 Windsurfing Jahrbuch 2019

ON THE BEACH: The Seal is the compact handling sail from GUNSAILS. The dimensions remained unchanged compared to the previous year, as well as the exemplary equipment. There is plenty of X-Ply used. In the sail window it is quite coarse meshed to allow an almost unobstructed view of the lip. In the sail top there is still a narrow woven laminate. The wide open leech above the second batten is also conspicuous here. The battens are hardly pre-profiled. However, the Dacron luff panel allows the sail to develop a moderate profile under wind pressure. In addition, two clew eyelets are available for individual tuning. On the 2018 model we had criticized the twist behaviour of the sail. So we are very pleased that our criticism has been accepted and that the seam guidance in the sail top has changed significantly. Three (l) new seams, which stretch from the lower leech to the mast top, promise an improved twist behaviour.

ON THE WATER: From the first second on, the Seal stands out from its new stable brother Horizon and shows itself improved in several details for 2019. What remains with the Seal is the pleasantly good handling, it is agile and seems small. The power transmission is somewhat dampened, due to the soft luff panel and the generally rather soft profile. Although the Seal is not the fastest to planing, especially in direct comparison with the Horizon, with some powerful pulls on the back hand, even heavier riders can start planing quickly. The Seal does not do much by itself, but the pressure point further back has real advantages. It works like an accelerator pedal that can be controlled very effectively. If you pull the back hand, it accelerates directly. If you let go, the Seal brakes super-effectively. Nevertheless, with this direct control in its acceleration it does not come close to the peak values of the four-batten sails. Last year we especially noticed the unstable twist behaviour when there was more wind and jumping, this is now a bit better and looks more harmonious. However the Seal is not a real high speed sail for jumping in a lot of wind. But it is powerful on the wave, if necessary completely neutral and yet with sufficient power reserves on the back hand for turns in floppy waves.

CONCLUSION: The Seal goes slightly improved into the year 2019 and has rightly already been able to drive itself into many hearts last year, because on the wave it has no weaknesses. However, the Seal is still rather comfortable on the way, conditions with borderline wind are less well tolerated.

PLANCHEMAG 11-12 2018 / SEAL 4.7 2019

GUNSAILS | Testbericht Seal 2019 Planchemag

The Seal is one of the most compact 4-batten sails and has a deep profile in the front area with pleasant elasticity as well as a new distribution of X-Ply materials, namely a lighter square-ply in the sail top. Like the Horizon you have the choice between 2 clew eyelets. It is recommended for RDM masts, but is also compatible for SDM.

ON THE WATER: The Seal is one of the most powerful 4-batten wave sails on the market, with a well distributed tension between the hands. It is relatively light (it is equipped with one of the lightest masts on the market) and pulls strongly forward, but keeps the board quite deep on the water and always has some damping to catch choppy water. It's not the most efficient of the group in tense conditions like Bump&Jump, but this super compact sail stands out with always enough pull in the wave to maintain speed when the wind is dropping, when restarting or when wave power is dropping. In handling it is quite well behaved, which benefits the rider and it also has a good trim range through the two clew eyelets: it breathes well in the wind. In the wave it pulls effectively forward in the buttom, when pushing the front edge of the board it accelerates nicely, which makes the handling easier, the sail lies balanced in both hands and then releases the pressure on top of the wave when you open it. It's not the sail that's easiest to neutralize, but all with a certain smoothness and a good balance between handling and stability. The sail gains strength and pull on the rear hand by using the upper eyelet, good to go upwind and in lighter winds.

CONCLUSION: Very well positioned in price, the Seal is one of the strongest 4-batten sails in light and medium winds, offering an excellent ratio of stability and maneuverability with ubiquitous and uniform pull in the hands to surf effectively in waves with a wide range of use.

GUNSAILS | Test Report Seal 2019 Windsurf Wave Sail Wind Mag

DESIGN: The 4 batten Compact Wave sail from GUNSAILS was already fundamentally revised last year, this year it will be launched without any major changes, apart from the graphic design. It should be noted that it consists of 100% X-Ply and Square-Ply and the clew is reinforced with Kevlar.

ON THE WATER: Without surprise, the Seal always shows a quite pronounced and well fixed profile in the front area. Lying in hands it develops a balanced pull, but also always has some pull on the back hand. When it comes to planing, accelerating, running upwind or drive in the wave, the performance is not delayed. The Seal shows an interesting power development, with which it masters all possible wind and wave conditions, even more, despite its 4-batten profile it brings a wide range of use. The profile stability in increasing wind is very satisfactory. In the wave, the Seal is effective thanks to its drive and the pull it develops in side-onshore, which also helps in initiating trick manoeuvres. It is an easy-to-handle sail, but also has some leverage in the upper part, which you can feel sometimes. In manoeuvres on the wave, it neutralises itself well when opened and lets disturbing drag out. In the area of reactivity, when you want to shift from drive to sensitivity or throw the sail from one side to the other without restriction, the sail shows satisfactory behaviour, but does not have the playfulness of some of its competitors.

CONCLUSION: With the Seal, GUNSAILS presents a good, modern wave sail with a wide range of use. It is equipped with a good fundamental performance and all other important characteristics of a wave sail for multi-fin boards. You can't do anything wrong here, especially with this flattering price-performance ratio. You can only blame him for a small lack of playfulness.

+: Range of use, balance, versatility, price
-: A bit more leverage, missing a bit of playfulness
