Introducing the next generation of 2 Cam Power Freeride - EXCEED. The successor of the Sunray sets new standards in lightness, early planing and performance. Probably the most uncomplicated camber sail on the market, does not only exceeds our expectations.

Windsurf Sail ProgrammWindsurf Sail Character

> Early planing 2 roll cam freeride sail
> Reduced boom length for more control and easier manoeuvres
> High pressure point stability and speed
> Cross batten concept for more control
> Monofilm in the top and Tension Frame on the clew reduce weight
> Compatible with RDM mast up to 7.0 with additional RDM camber set
> Two eyelets for individual trimming

The Exceed is one of many innovations developed by the GUNSAILS R&D Tarifa. With a new outline, 2 cambers and now only 6 battens, it excels the ability of the Sunray. The new development does not only redefine the handling of the sail but does also improve the wind range, control and overall performance. Thanks to the perfectly balanced profile, the sail gets planing early and accelerates already in the low winds. In manoeuvres the Exceed can be handled playfully and the cambers rotate in an instant. Due to its defined and balanced pressure point the sail can be effortlessly controlled in the higher wind range.
Sizes up to 7.0 can be rigged with both RDM and SDM. The RDM mast gives the sail a slightly softer feeling with more handling. The SDM increases the drive and the wind range. No matter if SDM or RDM, the Exceed keeps its promises and is super easy in terms of rigging.
In order to make the sail as light as possible and ensure the established GUNSAILS quality, there are various Kevlar reinforcements integrated in the sail construction. These control exactly the stretch of the material and guarantee long lasting sail characteristics.
The Exceed is the new freeride appearance in the GUNSAILS range. Whether on land or water, the handling of a camber sail has never been that easy. Nevertheless, it is packed with performance and unique windsurfing capabilities.
Let's Exceed your expectations!

Freeride Windsurf Sail

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - F.R.E.D.

F.R.E.D. will help you to fi nd the optimal luff trim for your sail. The mark is found in the upper sail window and serves as an orientation point to create the perfect luff tension (loose leech).

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Top Guard

The large reinforcement at the sail top avoids abrasion and wearing out whilst rigging.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Vario Top

The top opening is enlarged for an easier mast insertion. The adjustment buckle is placed behind the mast; unnecessary webbing can be stowed in the top opening.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Mini Battens

Lightweight mini battens take control of the leech while twisting and avoid detrimental leech fl utter. In this way, the window fabrics are spared and the longevity of the sail is predefined.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Batten Guard

PVC tabs on the upper batten pockets prevent wearing out and abrasion whilst rigging.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Internal Trim Batten

The Internal Trim Batten system is completely integrated into the batten pocket and the battens can stay tensioned in the sail. The profi led end piece offers additional protection against abrasion.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Pocket Guard

A PVC braid, sewed on the bottom batten pocket, protects your sail from abrasion while uphauling and waterstarting.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Reduced Boom Length

The Reduced Boom Length design shortens the boom length. The handling is much easier and feels more compact. The sail control is signifi cantly improved. A shorter boom is generally stiffer and will assist in maintaining the sail stability and profile.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Offset Clew

The Wave sails are equipped with 2 clew eyelets which are set asymmetrically for individual tuning:

Upper eyelet for more power
Lower eyelet for more control

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Trim Setting

The boom length is printed beside the clew. The mast lenght is patched on the mast protector.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Boom Position Control

The printed height scale at the boom opening helps you to easily remember your personal boom position.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Double Lock Seams

Double seams form the most stable connection between individual panels and different materials. They are used in stress zones as well as in areas of high tension and make your sail robust and durable.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Foot Guard

All seams in the significantly stressed foot area are protected by Dacron coverings. A PVC edging from foot to the first batten protects the leech edge against your board’s nonslip coating.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Comfort Pulley

The integrated triple pulley has large easy turning stainless brass rolls which greatly reduce the effort required for sail trimming. Also, if you prefer, the rolls are removable to allow the use of standard downhaul pulley hooks.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Sleeve Volumer

The GUNSAILS logo that is sewn on the sleeve keeps it open at the boom opening area like a clip and thus mast insertion is much easier.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Strap On

For very easy packing away and storage: Just roll the sail up and fix the elastic retainer.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Mesh Pocket

On the inside of the protector you will find a closable mesh pocket which can hold e.g. your downhaul surplus.

GUNSAILS | Sail Features - Mast Foot Protector

The large mast foot protector can be pulled back whilst rigging. The loop eases the initial pulling down of the sail. The uphaul can be comfortably inserted through an opening in the protector.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Intelligent Material Assembly

The well designed combination of different materials allows weight savings without losing stability. By varying the stretch behaviour of the individual materials, we can precisely define each sail profile under pressure and guarantee you consistent sailing characteristics over the long term.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Tension Frame

The Tension frame forms a functional unit with the smart clew construction. It is built from multidirectional x-ply and framed with insignia. Therefore it can resist maximum stress levels. The Tension frame receives the force from the clew and distributes the tension with the additional warp lines into the sail. The layout of the tension frame is designed to support the individual profile of every sail. Conclusively the tension frame improves the response of the sail and increases the profile stability. It also ensures long lasting sail characteristics and improves the overall durability of the sail.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Double Lock Seams

Double Seams provide the most stable connection between panels or different materials. They find use in areas of high material tension and make your sail tough and durable.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Smart Clew Construction

The Smart Clew Construction is based on the tension specific and precise alignment of different materials. The result is an extremely durable clew area without additional weight. Depending the sail the layout of the materials varies in order to suit the resulting tension lines in order to distribute the force from the clew, towards the Tension Frame into the sail. That helps to create more response, better profile stability and long lasting sail characteristics.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Kevlar Stretch Control

Through the selected use of kevlar warp laminate, we are able to precisely define the stretch properties of every sail. This leads to more response and a long lasting and stable sail profile. The light and unidirectional kevlar threads show very low stretch, even under highest loads. They are individually positioned in each sail to suit its range of application, leading to long lasting performance and sail characteristics.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Multidirectional X-Ply

Multidirectional X-Ply is used in high stress areas. The thread layout shows a higher density of polyester yarn, thus making the material more resistant than the regular X-Ply. The additional vertical thread direction allows the material to take more tension and force in the critical tension line.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - Square-Ply

The square ply is based on the same concept as X-ply material. However the threads are aligned in a 90 degree angle and the material offers a higher overall thread density. That allows us to reduce the thickness of the included monofilm to save weight, but ensure durability at the same time.

GUNSAILS | Sail Tech - X-Ply

X-PLY the all time classic of the reinforced laminates. It is light, stable and has a good transparency. Therefore it is used in the window area of the Wave-and Cross Over Sails. X-Ply also does withstand higher punctual stress. In case of a cut, the threads avoid further damage because they stop the cut from spreading through the window.

GUNSAILS | Sunray Testbericht Freerace Segel Windsurfing Jahrbuch 2019

ON THE BEACH: The Sunray is the uncomplicated camber sail from Gun Sails and is aimed at recreational windsurfers who want to go full speed on large freeride boards. The leech is strikingly wide above the two clew eyelets. Together with the long boom this results in a very long sailing string, which has advantages especially in light winds. The lower leech is well protected from damage by X-Ply. The mast pocket is made of canvas and is slightly narrower than the Cosmic from GA. The second and third battens are fitted with two relatively large cambers from below. Instead of sewing in zippers over the cambers, Renato Morlotti simply left the mast pocket open at the back in the appropriate places. So the construction is easy here too. Only at the luff extender you should give the sail plenty of loose leech. Then the Sunray forms a deep belly that flattens out far behind the harness lines.

ON THE WATER: The Sunray lies pleasantly stable in the hand during dumpling, but doesn't look particularly small and also reacts less directly to impulses from the driver's side. As soon as the first gust of wind pushes a little harder into the sail, you can discreetly feel how the profile works and develops propulsion. This dampened but completely uniform way of developing power reliably pushes heavy boards off without the rider having to do anything. With a softer characteristic, the sail can be easily and effectively inflated and is quite forgiving, and it always offers enough feedback on the rear hand for the right angle of attack. So you can glide really early with the Sunray and even in wind holes the deep profile keeps the board gliding for a long time and is difficult to cover. It almost looks like a large, soft wing that glides through gusts and wind holes playfully without pushing the rider too far to the limits. "The Sunray always feels the same in the range of twelve to 20 knots! This sentence from the test team is very accurate, whether this character is to be evaluated positive or negative, remains your task. Unfortunately, this classic freeride feeling is combined with less agile handling and a feeling that is always a bit cumbersome. But you don't have to be afraid of the camber, it's very smooth.

CONCLUSION: The Sunray is a sail that does a lot of work in changing winds and does not require any technical refinements from the rider. Only while jibing you should grap firmly.

GUNSAILS | Testbericht Sunray Freerace Windsurf Segel Planchemag 2019

Efficient in light and medium winds

This sail with a slim mast pocket has a clear profile that goes up and a loose leech that extends far into the profile. With slightly more square meters than the average it has the longest boom.

ON THE WATER: It's no easier to rig than this, especially the fixing of the Cambers. In hands the Sunray feels a little heavier at first contact. It is characterized by its general balance in the planing phase, it pulls strongly forward and thus supports the pilot to the maximum: this is very pleasant and above all effective. This lightness and balance can be felt throughout the ride, with the profile working well and letting out the excess wind thanks to the Loose Leech. It produces good, always very consistent pull in hands with just the right amount of softness that makes the whole thing comfortable. With the upper eyelet it is very efficient in light and medium winds, then you always have some reserve, a permanent pull to cross lulls and stay hooked in the harness. On long distances it's a bit more tiring than its competitors, it also has the largest area and the longest boom. You shouldn't hesitate to pull the clew tension a little and switch to the lower eyelet to reduce the pull in hands to plane again with more ease, with more performance and an increased range of use. In the jibe, the camber rotation is exemplary without being the lightest for lightweights.

CONCLUSION: Simple and easy to use, the Sunray is a smooth and flexible motor that delivers a great performance to get the widest and heaviest boards to plane quickly. It is balanced and multiplies your planing time with only 7.5 sqm.

+: Power, range, general balance, easy to set up, good performance.
-: A bit more challenging for lightweights (larger surface and the longest boom in the group)
