TEST REPORTS

WIND SPÉCIAL TEST 2021 | EXCEED 7.5 2021

Test Report Windsurf Sail Surf Magazin, Windsurf Journal, Planchemag, Windsurf UK, Windnews

The best of the Camber beginners, awarded with "Choice of the test team“

DESIGN: For a camber sail, the Exceed 7.5 has a small mast pocket, the profile quickly deepens from the edge of the mast and extends far up. The area under the boom is decent. 2 eyelets in a staggered arrangement are located under a 15 cm notch on the clew.

ON THE WATER: The Exceed 7.5 has a simple cut and is very easy to rig. The mast pocket, which is not very large, leaves plenty of room to insert the mast. Positioning the camber through the boom opening is then a cinch, even without an additional opening in the mast pocket. Trimming is done to the same extent, without pain, and as icing on the cake, adjustment is clear and perfectly precise. Just like all Gunsails, you don't need a PhD in tuning to get a perfectly tuned engine. The lightness is also present on the water. For a predefined camber profile, the Exceed is surprisingly light and easy to handle. The rig is neither bulky nor tricky to get into the right position. Start planing is smooth but efficient, and sailing is effortless. The profile is held by only 6 battens, but it's stable. The shortened boom length provides additional ease in the sail's handling. The performance is good, it's more than enough for pure planing pleasure and doesn't make a fool of itself in the freeride department. On the contrary, the easy handling makes it possible to rock in all serenity.

VERDICT: The Exceed sails easily and with distinction. The Gunsails design team has created a rig that is 100% designed for accessibility. This pre-designed profile is an invitation to novice cambers because the rigging and handling are so easy. The Exceed has the stability benefits of a camber predefined sail profile while being amazingly light.

WIND NEWS 06-2021 | EXCEED 7.5 2021

Test Report Windsurf Sail Surf Magazin, Windsurf Journal, Planchemag, Windsurf UK, Windnews

Testing the GunSails Exceed 7.5, the freerace/freeride sail from GunSails, was not on our test schedule for 2021. However, this year all windsurfing products, including sails, arrive very late... and so we decided to test what was available.

No disadvantage, as the Exceed turned out to be a camber sail that is so easy to rig and ride that it really earned the sympathy of those who got to try it out. The sail doesn't seem to have undergone any particular changes since the 2020 model year, apart from the new orange look: It's always easy to rig with a 460/21 sdm mast (priced at 25 euros, an extra set of camber is also available if you use the rdm mast), and all you need is a 75% or 80% carbon mast to have a great time. An easy and intuitive sail to rig and ride, lighter than many other camber sails even if you don't use a 100% carbon mast.

The fact that there are only two cams with the corresponding six-batten shape gives it an undeniable advantage on the scale. With the two cams perfectly aligned with the mast and rotating with precision, the Exceed 7.5 only needs a few pump strokes to get going and continues to plane smoothly even in the wind holes. Performance is not excessive, but it is plenty, and the sail does not wobble in gusts or make itself felt on the back hand. On half-wind, it's amazing how easy it is to achieve excellent top speed, while at the more technical speeds on upwind and downwind, it doesn't need to shy away from comparison with other sail categories with more battens and camber.

The reduced boom length (only a few cm (204/212 depending on the eyelet used) and the lightness of the six-batten shape make it "more comfortable and relaxed" than other sails of this size, both when tacking and gybing.

Manoeuvrability, easy trim and handling, general lightness and "substantial" performance make this sail the perfect companion for intermediate surfers who want to plane with ease and rip off miles at full speed... all at a more than reasonable price!
