All based on a modular system that will be able to grow with your needs and abilities. With its high aspect ratio frontwing and a rather slim profile it combines low wind performance with outstanding acceleration, effortless flights and reliable control.

WHICH SIZE SHOULD I CHOOSE?
Probably the most frequently asked question. In principle, it can be stated: The larger the front wing, the easier it is to launch and the longer you stay in the air. On the other hand, smaller front wings are more responsive/maneuverable and you can also achieve higher speeds with them.
In addition, your foil should also fit your body weight. The lighter the rider, the smaller the front wing. And one last rule: The more advanced the rider, the sooner he can switch to a smaller wing.

900
The racer among the front wings, high speed with perfect control, fast jibes but still forgiving handling. A wing for advanced foilers, lightweights or high wind enthusiasts.

1050
The freerace all-rounder. Fast lift, excellent speed even in the lower wind range and stress-free handling of the foil characterize this wing. The 1050 is suitable for most weight classes and skill levels.

1350
The Freerider takes off fast and then flies ultra stable with great balance and lots of speed. Wind holes do not affect this wing. Medium weight riders will love this combination.

1500
The 1500 has the same performance profile as the 1050, just with a larger surface area to improve low wind performance. Ideal for heavier riders and those looking to expand the light wind range of their current foil.

DESIGN
The HY-FOIL FREE is built in our aluminium/carbon hybrid construction leading to the perfect compromise between stability, lightness and price. The high modulus carbon frontwing with downward facing wingtips provide additional stability while ensuring more safety for the rider. A 95 cm long fuselage, built from Aerospace grade aluminium is the sweet spot between stability and agility. Precisely synchronized modular mounting slots within the fuselage are securing the front- and back wing in the perfect angle of attack. The carbon backwing, with its subtle wingtips, stabilizes the flight and regulates the lift in higher speeds.
Thanks to years of simulation experience from the aircraft industry, the HY-FOIL FREE reaches the optimum of lift efficiency and speed, while reducing drag and avoiding turbulence.

MODULARITY
The HY-FOIL FREE can be expanded in a modular way. Once you've decided on a set of a certain size, you can then later customize your next set from a selection of Front Wings, according to your needs.
This precisely calculated and finetuned foil will be the perfect choice for every foiling ability and will lift your foiling comfortably to the next level.

SURF MAGAZIN // HY-FOIL FREE 1500

The GunSails Hy-Foil 1500 is another model in the proven Hy-Foil series and is specifically designed for windsurfers who value early lift, control, and gliding performance in lighter winds thanks to its large front wing.

First Impressions: Straight out of the box, the Hy-Foil 1500 shows its thoughtful design: it comes in a generously sized and well-padded bag, with all components stored and protected separately. The front wing even has its own neoprene cover, so you can safely set down the foil even when assembled, without risk of damage.
The foil set consists of an 85 cm aluminum mast, an aluminum fuselage, and rather substantial carbon wings – a combination that offers an attractive compromise between performance and price, though it does result in slightly more weight. This extra weight is mostly noticeable when carrying the foil, but hardly at all during use on the water.
Build quality is impressive throughout: the components feel premium, the finish is clean, and all parts fit snugly with no play and can be assembled quickly.
Three screws each are used to connect the mast to the fuselage and the front wing to the fuselage. The rear wing is mounted with two Torx screws. The Tuttlebox adapter is secured with three long Allen screws.
Stiffness levels of both mast and fuselage are high – the aluminum mast does not have to hide behind carbon in terms of rigidity. The contact surfaces of the connections are functional, although slightly narrower than some newer systems, which might theoretically result in slightly less overall stiffness – though in practice, this doesn’t present any downside.

Wing Design: The 1500 front wing stands out with a wingspan of 90 cm and a very large profile depth of 20 cm, making it more compact than the other freeride sizes (1050 and 1350). Its unusual foil profile, with the thickest point roughly at mid-depth, differs clearly from the typical teardrop shape. The wing edges are slightly sharpened but not dangerously so – with the exception of the rather sharp, pointy wingtips on the rear wing, which could have been more rounded for this foil category.

On the water: With 1500 cm² surface area, the GunSails Hy-Foil Free 1500 is among the larger foils in the windsurf market. Still, it doesn’t feel sluggish at all – in fact, it’s lively, balanced, and surprisingly sporty.
Take-off is smooth and controlled, with no abrupt lift. The foil requires a bit of speed in semi-planing mode before gently transitioning into flight – ideal for beginners or comfort-oriented riders. A couple of light pump strokes accelerate the board quickly. Lift-off can happen very early with a small push from the back foot – but never in a sudden or unpredictable way.
Once in the air, the foil remains stable and predictable, maintaining altitude even at low speeds. Even as speed or wind increases, it stays easily controllable. A real highlight: it neither pulls up too much nor drops unexpectedly. All up-and-down movements are calm and manageable.
At the lower end of the wind range, the board encourages a more upright stance. As wind increases, it can be edged more aggressively with a sporty feel, letting you lean hard to windward with your body and rig – making upwind angles very effective.
Occasionally, you’ll feel a slight “buzz” through the foil – like a fishing weight skimming over rippled sand – but these are just minor vibrations, only noticeable to the most sensitive feet and with no impact on control or performance.
Even at higher speeds – during tests up to around 35 km/h with a 6.5 m² sail in light to moderate wind – drag remains surprisingly low. The wing’s profile seems very well designed, enabling speeds you wouldn't typically expect from a 1500 cm² foil.
In maneuvers such as jibes, the foil reacts reliably and predictably. While super-tight carving isn't its strong suit, it handles tighter arcs than classic power jibes with no issue. Active riders are rewarded with stable turns and good exit speed. Foot switches are also easy to execute, as the foil maintains consistent altitude and is not overly sensitive to weight shifts.

Verdict: The GunSails Hy-Foil Free 1500 impresses with a well-thought-out build, high-quality materials, and a balanced in-flight feel. The standout qualities are early lift-off, excellent control, and solid speed. It appeals to both ambitious beginners and experienced freeriders looking for a versatile foil for light wind sessions. Given its attractive price point, it offers excellent overall value.

SURF MAGAZIN // HY-FOIL FREE 1350

ON THE BEACH: The very favorable foil is delivered in a suitably large bag with many intermediate layers. The main wing is in a separate cover, which can also remain on the mounted foil. The rear wing hardly needs this for self-protection as it is mounted on top of the fuselage. The tips of the rear wing are slightly curved upwards and quite pointed. The trailing edge of the mast looks quite sharp for a freeride foil. Mounting the foil is quick and easy with a manageable number of screws. The tuttlebox head is also screwed to the mast as an adapter. The foil must be removed from the board to check this screw connection. All screws are well stored in a small plastic box.

ON THE WATER: The Hy-Foil (tested in the JP-Australia Free Foil 130) marks the transition from sporty freeriding to freerace. In the take-off phase, it requires only slightly more speed than the Starboard SuperFlyer. As soon as it is flying, it assumes a fairly stable flying position, or at least it can be kept well under control with active support by putting weight on the feet. Although it doesn't quite offer the inherent stability of a SuperFlyer or RedWing, it feels very fast even in the lightest of breezes, is easy to edge upwind and glides endlessly in wind holes. You can also expect very similar characteristics in the jibe: you can whiz in with a lot of speed and a forward-flapped sail like in a race jibe or make tight turns. The foil is very easy to turn and makes all radii quite playful, but it also needs to be steered a bit more cleanly, otherwise it reacts quite quickly to load changes. The 1300 square centimeters of surface area carry it long and far through the jibe, the foil mast is sufficiently long at 83 centimeters for dry turns. Especially foil freeriders with some foil experience should have a lot of fun with the GunSails Foil.

SURF-CONCLUSION: With the Hy-Foil Free, GunSails has an attractive offer in terms of price and performance. The connections don't seem quite as elaborate and sophisticated as with some other foils, but on the water the foil can convince the sporty freerider with good performance and still quite gentle flying characteristics.

Red like the fire department, the foil from Gunsails leaves nothing to burn. Even the scope of delivery is excellent: with all screws cleanly sorted in a pillbox, two carbon wings, all in a solid bag. The 85 centimeter long mast is very stiff in all directions and in normal foil conditions sufficiently long with enough reserves. However, these are hardly necessary thanks to the very predictable foiling behavior. The wing comes up very early even in the lightest wind - two or three pumping actions are usually enough - and then builds up lift quickly and constantly. This allows for a sporty, edged flight position with a lot of forward thrust and pressure on the front wing and a lot of speed even in light winds. At the same time, the foil feels well controllable, but not nervous - and very predictable in the up-down axis. The foil is one of the fastest, especially in medium wind. In the gybe it stays up for a long time, prefers to go through medium turns, but can also take pressure quite well. With a spacer on the tail wing the lift can be reduced a little bit, then less draft is enough for a very good control over the foil even in stronger gusts.

CONCLUSION: Top freerace foil.

+ Light wind, speed potential, control
- Nothing

Serenity in flight

Developed by a team of German aeronautical engineers, this new aluminum foil features a slim carbon wing and wide span carbon stabilizer, stiff fuselage and Deep Tuttle attachment head. A carbon mast is also compatible with this aircraft.

ON THE WATER: It needs a little more cruising speed than the best, then takes off with a more linear, smoother climb and plenty of lateral stability, : very suitable for first flights. In the air, the overall balance is very good, especially laterally, which is immediately reassuring and, above all, forgiving of errors in stance. You can feel the support when piloting, the foil is programmed to fly straight without lurching. Of course, those who like playful foils and turns lack liveliness, but instead the behavior is very healthy, very linear and therefore easier to control. One appreciates the balance of power and planing with plenty of support to go upwind and maintain flight in the lulls, while maintaining a very nice, natural cruising speed with little water resistance. Since there is no noise or vibration, the planing is very pure and you are less likely to notice that the acceleration and speed are so high. This Gunsails foil stabilizes narrow boards to go straight and doesn't deform too much when pushed against the wind with wider boards, indicating some tolerance. It is powerful in the low to medium wind range and will only have a little more power on the front leg at high speeds. Finally, it is very stable to explore the gybe at low speed.

CONCLUSION: Gunsails has hit the bull's eye with this easily accessible, very stable, gliding and powerful foil for less than €900. You can easily get on with it and calmly go on big tours with airtime gybes at wind speeds of 10 to 20 knots. A nice surprise.

+ Price, XL stability, performance/planing ratio, upwind ability, accessibility, good performance, silent flight.
