Our super-fast no cam freerace sail with a wide wind range has been a hot shot for a while: "Speed without effort" was the title of last year’s Planchemag test and it got an award. "For simple or sporty freeriding the Rapid hits the mark with an unbeatable price," was the conclusion of WIND magazine test. "A sail with an extremely wide wind range with one trim, very fast, pressure-stable and easy to sail," the german Surf magazine summed up in 2016. "A freerace machine in a freeride clothing," the Windsurfing Jahrbuch wrote. What more could we say? Just that we have not changed the positive features of the 2017 model. The Rapid scores with a quick planing, high acceleration and excellent top speed while being really easy to handle. Pure sailing fun for the dedicated surfer, without any camber. Those who prefer even easier handling can use a high-percentage RDM of up to 6.7 sqm without cutting its performance.

FAST RIGGING EASY DOING

F.R.E.D. will help you to fi nd the optimal luff trim for your sail. The mark is found in the upper sail window and serves as an orientation point to create the perfect luff tension (loose leech).

Image

REDUCED BOOM LENGTH

The Reduced Boom Length design shortens the boom length. The handling is much easier and feels more compact. The sail control is signifi cantly improved. A shorter boom is generally stiffer and will assist in maintaining the sail stability and profile.

Image

TOP GUARD

The large reinforcement at the sail top avoids abrasion and wearing out whilst rigging.

Image

VARIO TOP

The top opening is enlarged for an easier mast insertion. The adjustment buckle is placed behind the mast; unnecessary webbing can be stowed in the top opening.

Image

MINI BATTENS

Lightweight mini battens take control of the leech while twisting and avoid detrimental leech fl utter. In this way, the window fabrics are spared and the longevity of the sail is predefined.

Image

BATTEN GUARD

PVC tabs on the upper batten pockets prevent wearing out and abrasion whilst rigging.

Image

INTERNAL TRIM BATTEN

The Internal Trim Batten system is completely integrated into the batten pocket and the battens can stay tensioned in the sail. The profi led end piece offers additional protection against abrasion.

Image

POCKET GUARD

A PVC braid, sewed on the bottom batten pocket, protects your sail from abrasion while uphauling and waterstarting.

Image

OFFSET CLEW

The Wave sails are equipped with 2 clew eyelets which are set asymmetrically for individual tuning.
▲ Upper eyelet for more power
▲ Lower eyelet for more control

Image

BOOM SETTING

The boom length is printed beside the clew.

Image

BOOM POSITION CONTROL

The printed height scale at the boom opening helps you to easily remember your personal boom position.

Image

SLEEVE VOLUMER

The Gun Sails logo that is sewn on the sleeve keeps it open at the boom opening area like a clip and thus mast insertion is much easier.

Image

MAST FOOT PROTECTOR

The large mast foot protector can be pulled back whilst rigging. The loop eases the initial pulling down of the sail. The uphaul can be comfortably inserted through an opening in the protector.

Image

FOOT GUARD

All seams in the significantly stressed foot area are protected by Dacron coverings. A PVC edging from foot to the first batten protects the leech edge against your board’s nonslip coating.

Image

COMFORT PULLEY

The integrated triple pulley has large easy turning stainless brass rolls which greatly reduce the effort required for sail trimming. Also, if you prefer, the rolls are removable to allow the use of standard downhaul pulley hooks.

Image

MESH POCKET

On the inside of the protector you will find a closable mesh pocket which can hold e.g. your downhaul surplus.

Image

STRAP ON

For very easy packing away and storage: Just roll the sail up and fix the elastic retainer.

HAS PURE SLALOM GENES

The no-cam Freeride/Freerace with 7 battens has a very pronounced forward sail depth with a more open leech than its rivals (the twist goes down lower). It's made of Dacron for softness.

ON THE WATER: Power is diffused gradually in light winds and it takes a good squall before this typical race profile comes alive. It doesn't do so well planing in small waves. It doesn't give you the best support under the back hand, it is less lively. But once it gets moving you'll fully appreciate its stability and traction at the front. You can stay well planted at the back. while being pulled forward. It is a sail intended to be laid flat on the deck. The Rapid is well named, with one of the fastest top speeds, especially sailing crosswind or close to the wind. There is just a little less power upwind when the wind drops a notch, due to its more open leech, which can result in a lack of power under the back hand. Can be combined with a no-cam Freerace sail. The Rapid has a firm profile that responds well if you close the sail on the deck and put your back into it. It hauls naturally in windward conditions. This is one of the easiest to ride at full pelt. It sits naturally in the wind and you can regulate the power that you want on the back hand by adjusting the tension at the clew. You can afford to relax the clew more than with the others, while continuing to haul in. Finally, it feels a bit cumbersome when gybing, nothing too serious though.

SUMMARY: A natural sporty sail that expresses itself more directly in a steady rather than a squally wind. A real no-cam slalom that is best in crosswind and windward, you can swallow up the miles without getting tired. A good long distance engine.

+: Bargain price, easy to adjust, glides windward and crosswind, stability, control.
- : Less impressive in low wind conditions.
