Freerace power without cambers
Speed. Control. Simplicity.

Just like the Zoom, our design team has fine-tuned the Rapid to further enhance efficiency and handling. The foot outline of both Zoom and Rapid was redesigned to reduce weight and minimize friction wear. The new straight cut from the tack to the bottom batten end eliminates several reinforcements that were previously needed to prevent deformation. The luff area is now slimmer and more efficient – racing-inspired, freeride-optimized.
Seven tube battens secure maximum profile stability, the clew cutout with two offset eyelets extends the trimming range, and the molded mast protector ensures durability every session.

Control meets speed
The Rapid shows its potential right away: direct, balanced handling and smooth, forward-oriented acceleration. Light in the hands, it picks up speed quickly and runs increasingly free as the wind builds – always with reliable control and steady drive. The stable draft stays locked in place, while the second clew eyelet provides extra control in strong winds.

Performance with long distance genes
In lighter winds, the Rapid starts in a linear, effortless way and transforms increasing breeze into an impressive mix of efficiency, relaxed handling, and high top speed. A sail that lets you stay powered up longer – without draining your energy.

PLANCHEMAG // RE-RAPID 6.2 2025

Going green

This new 2025 series sail is made from 40-45% recycled PET bottles (editor's note: the green and white colour in the picture) to create an environmentally friendly sail construction that equals conventional sails in terms of durability and performance, according to Gunsails. The recycled material, which is in x-ply at the foot and top, is slightly thicker to achieve the same mechanical properties, with one side feeling rougher and the other smoother. The design features a luff with a slightly more pronounced and forward-shifted profile, a narrower mast pocket width and a lower centre of gravity.

ON THE WATER

Tested on an SDM mast (RDM compatible), the Re-Rapid is slightly heavier than average in favour of a robust construction. The pronounced profile in the front area behind the mast ensures a clear and stable hold when launching, which is supported by the entire profile pulling in the arms. The connection between the lower and upper sail sections, especially the leech, seems to be better matched, resulting in higher performance. The overall stability is amazingly good, with a profile that doesn't shift in the gusts: it's a sail that offers more freerace programme than most of its competitors. The performance on a deep half-wind course is high, with a front part of the sail that has constant pull and a profile that remains stable. The other side of the coin is that it is slightly more nervous and stiffer than average in waves. The DNA of the Rapid 2023/2024 can be found in a profile that can be forgotten in the hands and is easier to handle. It lifts the board without flying away in the gust, with still the urge to accelerate, and this thanks to a good work of the leech. It does not offer as much elasticity and flexibility as others, the emphasis is on acceleration, stability and control at high speeds.

It is not the lightest in the Jibe, but provides a smooth and effective profile rotation.

CONCLUSION

At a time when sail development is moving towards a race for weight and dynamics or comfort (North) to promote convenience, performance and lightness, Gunsails is taking the eco-friendly construction route and introducing polyester foils made from recycled PET bottles. The result is a sail that is slightly heavier than the original version, but the sail feel remains the same, thanks to a new design that offers both more performance at low speeds and better breathability in the wind for a freerace no cam programme.

WIND SPECIAL TEST // RAPID 6.2 2025

As simple as it is powerful

The Rapid has a simple, sleek design held in place by 7 evenly spaced tube battens. A clew recess surmounts two offset eyelets. A new 5.2 m2 sail completes the range and a new moulded mast foot protector has been added. It is compatible with SDM or RDM masts and is also available in recycled PET.

ON THE WATER

Follow the instructions for rigging, the Rapid shows its best side without you having to do a lot of trial and error. The handling is direct thanks to a very good balance and a cloth that lies lightly in the hand. The take-off is not as explosive as with the larger models, but the ease of handling makes up for this. The Rapid takes shape as soon as it is filled with wind and quickly reaches its cruising speed without any effort. As the leech generously releases the excess wind, the ride is not exhausting. The acceleration pulls forwards and allows you to race. The simple frame positions the Gunsails at the heart of high performance motors: Freedom of movement, balance, easy handling, easy performance and the more wind, the more the Gunsails runs. The RDM mast, which we recommend, brings a plus in agility. Although you can already control it well in high wind, a second clew eyelet provides even more grip in strong winds.

CONCLUSION: The Rapid is praised again and again by everyone who tries it. It is easily accessible, accelerates and is very fast. The Gunsails sail is an excellent student for long-distance racing with potential without being energy-intensive. Its price is another plus point.

Plus: Uncomplicated performance, strong wind, price.

Minus: Slight deficit at low revs
