PLANCHE MAG // TORRO 5.7

Effortless Handling
Made with 70% grid-reinforced panels and a prominent Dacron mast panel reinforcement, the Torro features a forward-oriented profile and a wide-open leech. Smaller sizes lean more towards wave use, while larger ones are clearly freeride-focused.

ON THE WATER
Light in the hands and with a relatively flat profile, the Torro gets going quickly – in gusts, the draft builts up behind the mast, generating direct drive. The sail positions itself cleanly in the wind with firm but not overwhelming back-hand pressure, supported by the open leech that efficiently releases airflow.
Its ride feels refined overall – the Torro is a “low-consumption” rig with natural self-stabilization that helps reduce rider fatigue. It quickly settles into a high cruising speed with strong acceleration in gusts.
In choppy conditions or strong gusts, the handling becomes a bit firmer and more direct than some of its rivals. The upside: easing off slightly on the back hand quickly reduces load – ideal for switching into “eco mode” and continuing to glide with minimal effort.
Thanks to its forward pivot point, the Torro also feels neutral and unobtrusive in the surf – you almost forget it’s there. That same agility shines in jibes, where the sail rotates with ease. As the wind picks up, it stays manageable for a long time without constant trimming.

VERDICT

Easy to tune and less in need of adjustment than many other sails in the test, the Torro strikes a great balance between restrained power, lively acceleration, strong stability on long reaches, and excellent maneuverability when jibing or riding waves. Add to that high top speed and a dynamic feel, and you’ve got a real price-performance standout.

Pros:
• Wide performance range with just one trim
• Excellent balance of speed and maneuverability
• High-quality construction
• Outstanding value for money

Cons:
• None

SURF MAGAZIN / TORRO 6.0

Just like an automatic gearbox, where you don't have to worry about the right gear, GunSails takes the decision out of your hands when trimming. There is a point in the sail as a marker for the luff trim - that's it! And it fits amazingly well. A strong pull on the downhaul and stiff battens stabilize the sail so well that you only need to fine-tune the clew. Without tension, the battens push far past the mast. But even set up like this, the Torro would already work. For a lighter sail feel and better handling, the battens are pulled back properly, but still rest against the side of the mast - more than with all other sails. The profile with a deep belly in the lower section and a lot of twist in the top section offers the best planing performance with top control without trimming.

And the Torro is also particularly fast. It is extremely stable in the hand, with an even pull on the mast and sail hand, balanced and perfectly poised like a small freeride sail. You hang into the harness, set it to autopilot and only have to take control again just before the jibe. In between, the Torro lies flush on the deck, doesn't fidget and doesn't buckle even in choppy water. However, it is less light as a feather and playful, but rather conveys a solid freeride feeling: it surfs fast and feels that way too. The high driving stability makes it possible to surf very fast with the sail even without having learned the sensitivity, but also requires a little more input if you want to move it. Nevertheless, it performs well in jibing without any restrictions. Some other sails just seem even more agile and light-handed and simply encourage more new moves. Intermediates get a sail with an “easy surfing” rating, and if your maneuver selection focuses on jumping, power jibes, duck jibes and occasional 360s, you'll also be right on target with the Torro. For blasting and jibing on small freeride and freemove boards, it is the first choice.

SURF-FAZIT: The Torro is the most affordable sail, especially in combination with the matching, very light RDM mast. It performs well in the most important maneuvering disciplines and offers the best performance in the group for strong wind freeriding, with particularly easy handling. It is a little heavier, but particularly solidly equipped.

WIND SPECIAL TEST // TORRO 5.3

Playful and Fast

The Torro is a versatile design that adapts depending on the sail size. In 2025, the monofilm area of the main window extends further toward the leech, and the panel layout has been slightly revised. The molded mast foot protector and the tack pulley have also been upgraded.

ON THE WATER

If trimming a sail still feels like a mystery to you, a GUNSAILS is the way to go – easy to rig and fine-tune by simply following the instructions. The Torro, compatible with RDM masts across all sizes, is easy to handle and pleasantly lightweight.

The 5.3 model stays true to its agile design, gets going early and smoothly, without delivering overwhelming power. The GUNSAILS provides instant acceleration that remains easy to control and can be fine-tuned with the back hand.

The sail cloth is stable but not locked in, giving the board full freedom for unrestrained runs. The Torro invites you to go for long rides and jump as much as you like.

Thanks to the boom length and a bit of extra area near the clew, the Torro is also playful in the waves, offering a touch of retained drive through the turns – both while wave riding and jibing – without compromising control or stability.

VERDICT

The Torro is hassle-free in every aspect – a true Bump & Jump sail that feels at home in all facets of the freemove category. Acceleration and freedom of movement are among its strong points, along with control and a wide range of use. The 5.3 size proves to be genuinely versatile and works well with a variety of boards.
