FAST RIGGING EASY DOING

F.R.E.D. will help you to fi nd the optimal luff trim for your sail. The mark is found in the upper sail window and serves as an orientation point to create the perfect luff tension (loose leech).

Image

REDUCED BOOM LENGTH

The Reduced Boom Length design shortens the boom length. The handling is much easier and feels more compact. The sail control is signifi cantly improved. A shorter boom is generally stiffer and will assist in maintaining the sail stability and profile.

Image

TOP GUARD

The large reinforcement at the sail top avoids abrasion and wearing out whilst rigging.

Image

VARIO TOP

The top opening is enlarged for an easier mast insertion. The adjustment buckle is placed behind the mast; unnecessary webbing can be stowed in the top opening.

Image

MINI BATTENS

Lightweight mini battens take control of the leech while twisting and avoid detrimental leech fl utter. In this way, the window fabrics are spared and the longevity of the sail is predefined.

Image

BATTEN GUARD

PVC tabs on the upper batten pockets prevent wearing out and abrasion whilst rigging.

Image

INTERNAL TRIM BATTEN

The Internal Trim Batten system is completely integrated into the batten pocket and the battens can stay tensioned in the sail. The profi led end piece offers additional protection against abrasion.

Image

POCKET GUARD

A PVC braid, sewed on the bottom batten pocket, protects your sail from abrasion while uphauling and waterstarting.

Image

OFFSET CLEW

The Wave sails are equipped with 2 clew eyelets which are set asymmetrically for individual tuning.
▲ Upper eyelet for more power
▲ Lower eyelet for more control

Image

BOOM SETTING

The boom length is printed beside the clew.

Image

BOOM POSITION CONTROL

The printed height scale at the boom opening helps you to easily remember your personal boom position.

Image

SLEEVE VOLUMER

The Gun Sails logo that is sewn on the sleeve keeps it open at the boom opening area like a clip and thus mast insertion is much easier.

Image

MAST FOOT PROTECTOR

The large mast foot protector can be pulled back whilst rigging. The loop eases the initial pulling down of the sail. The uphaul can be comfortably inserted through an opening in the protector.

Image

FOOT GUARD

All seams in the significantly stressed foot area are protected by Dacron coverings. A PVC edging from foot to the first batten protects the leech edge against your board’s nonslip coating.

Image

COMFORT PULLEY

The integrated triple pulley has large easy turning stainless brass rolls which greatly reduce the effort required for sail trimming. Also, if you prefer, the rolls are removable to allow the use of standard downhaul pulley hooks.

Image

MESH POCKET

On the inside of the protector you will find a closable mesh pocket which can hold e.g. your downhaul surplus.

Image

STRAP ON

For very easy packing away and storage: Just roll the sail up and fix the elastic retainer.

Image

HD X-PLY

The new High Density X-Ply shows the highest thread density of our used materials. It combines the characteristics of the square ply with the ones of the regular x-ply. Together they form a highly resistant and durable material, which is light at the same time. HD X-Ply finds application in the upper panels of our wave and freemove sails. The area including the material is specifically designed to suit the range of the sail. The result is an especially stable and reactive leech construction.

Image

TENSION FRAME

The Tension frame forms a functional unit with the smart clew construction. It is built from multidirectional x-ply and framed with insignia. Therefore it can resist maximum stress levels. The Tension frame receives the force from the clew and distributes the tension with the additional warp lines into the sail. The layout of the tension frame is designed to support the individual profile of every sail. Conclusively the tension frame improves the response of the sail and increases the profile stability. It also ensures long lasting sail characteristics and improves the overall durability of the sail.

Image

SMART CLEW CONSTRUCTION

The Smart Clew Construction is based on the tension specific and precise alignment of different materials. The result is an extremely durable clew area without additional weight. Depending the sail the layout of the materials varies in order to suit the resulting tension lines in order to distribute the force from the clew, towards the Tension Frame into the sail. That helps to create more response, better profile stability and long lasting sail characteristics.

Image

MULTIDIRECTIONAL X-PLY

Multidirectional X-Ply is used in high stress areas. The thread layout shows a higher density of polyester yarn, thus making the material more resistant than the regular X-Ply. The additional vertical thread direction allows the material to take more tension and force in the critical tension line.

Image

X-PLY

X-PLY the all time classic of the reinforced laminates. It is light, stable and has a good transparency. Therefore it is used in the window area of the Wave-and Cross Over Sails. X-Ply also does withstand higher punctual stress. In case of a cut, the threads avoid further damage because they stop the cut from spreading through the window.

Image

SQUARE-PLY

The square ply is based on the same concept as X-ply material. However the threads are aligned in a 90 degree angle and the material offers a higher overall thread density. That allows us to reduce the thickness of the included monofilm to save weight, but ensure durability at the same time.

Image

KEVLAR STRETCH CONTROL

Through the selected use of kevlar warp laminate, we are able to precisely define the stretch properties of every sail. This leads to more response and a long lasting and stable sail profile. The light and unidirectional kevlar threads show very low stretch, even under highest loads. They are individually positioned in each sail to suit its range of application, leading to long lasting performance and sail characteristics.

Image

DOUBLE LOCK SEAMS

Double Seams provide the most stable connection between panels or different materials. They find use in areas of high material tension and make your sail tough and durable.

Image

CROSS BATTEN CONCEPT

Mostly used on the flatwater range due to a lot of surface in the boom area. The longest batten of the sail starts below the boom area, crosses the boom line and ends above the clew. The crossing batten does stabilize the profile, which is extremely important in that area. Like that the sail is more effective in acceleration and pumping and has a more stable pressure point.

Image

SYMMETRICAL BATTEN SYSTEM

The alternate positioning of the battens on the back and the front of the sail leads to a more equalized tension- and weight distribution. This arrangement will provide you with the exact same sail feeling, independent of the direction you are riding.

WINDSURFING JAHRBUCH 2018 / TORRO 6.0

Image

Design: The GUNSAILS Torro has been a constant in the comparison of crossover sails for years and the test team has enjoyed it for years. Like hardly any other sail, it stands for the transition between freeride and wave sailing with sufficient handling for the first freestyle moves. For an even better overall package, the new Torro has been revised in some details. However, the basic framework remains in place: Five battens, with a stiff tube batten over the boom, a small loose leech and a dacron panel in the luff are well-known features; just like the well-known comfortable mast protector and the large meshed x-ply in the lower part of the sail. The profile of the batten above the boom has been slightly reduced for better wave suitability. The top has been fitted with a tight mesh laminate to reduce the weight of the upper part of the sail.

ON THE WATER: So much in advance: Fortunately, the makers of GUNSAILS have only marginally changed the Torro and have not completely overturned the working concept of previous years. With the GUNSAILS Torro you still don't get a feather-light but pleasantly balanced rig in your hand. It does a lot of propulsion from the first second on and can plane just as fast with an active driving style as the absolute power packs of the group. The power development is neither too direct, which could overtax inexperienced drivers, nor is it too indirect and spongy. Once you are planing with the Torro, it sets off very powerfully and reaches a very high top speed. This characteristic is not only suitable for pure crossover or freewave boards, but also works wonderfully in combination with small freeride boards. But the Torro is also suitable for trips in moderate wave conditions. In the chop the Dacron panel in the luff absorbs the peak loads well and the Torro shines with high speed. Only with a lot of wind the handling of the GUNSAILS becomes a bit more cumbersome, here the retrimming on the clew is worthwhile. But even then, the Torro will not become a neutral wave expert, but will continue to deliver good propulsion. But even the drivers who are too lazy to trim can be assured: The natural wind range of the Torro is, assuming enough luff tension, above average.

CONCLUSION: If you are looking for a sail for flat water use and occasional trips into the wave, you can't go wrong with the Torro. Although it is not radical in any way, it impresses with its overall performance and particular strengths in planing performance.

WIND SPECIAL TESTS 03-2018 / TORRO 5.7 (Choix des testeurs)

Image

100 % FUNBOARD SETTING

DESIGN: The Torro benefits from a slight revision of the panel layout, boom and luff length have changed slightly. It keeps its 3 mm square-ply on the two top battens. Different X-Ply variants are used depending on the area.

ON THE WATER: As it has the largest surface in this comparative test, it is not surprising that it looks imposing. Apart from that, this 5.7 is comfortable to hold on the water and the rig gives a light impression. With a light square-ply in the top it gives you a feeling of reduced top-heaviness. Its general handling places it under the 100 % Bump&Jump sails without deflecting to one side or the other, but feels comfortable everywhere. If you feel like waves, it is also correct to act there; it starts planing early and can be held for a long time in strong winds. The trim mark is not applied for nothing, if you follow GUNSAILS’s trim instructions exactly, you can get the most out of this rig, that's the case with the Torro.
The Mast Sail Combi is very reactive when pumping in light wind. The propulsion brings you into a full planing without affecting your driving style. The harmonious distribution of power allows it to run without restrictions. Although it has the drive of a real 5.7, the Torro remains playful to surf, without much consideration you can do what you want, whether with waveboard, freemove or freerider under your feet.

CONCLUSION: The Torro is a fun sail, which addresses to the allrounder, who likes going full throttle or jumping over a swell wave. Wave riding is also welcome, with moderate liveliness. On the straight the power is balanced. It's the kind of sail you go surfing with without headaches; the session becomes fun anyway because you just set it up, just adjust it and just start surfing.

+: Versatility Bump&Jump, control in strong wind, price
-: moderate wave suitability

PLANCHEMAG SPECIAL TESTS 2018 / TORRO 5.7

Image

"EFFICIENT FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE"

DESIGN: The Torro consists of 85% different X-Ply materials, with a Dacron mast panel. It has profile in the front, a short boom and a trim mark for the right loose leech.

ON THE WATER: In the front it is very deep, the GUNSAILS needs some tension at the boom. It starts planning early and has a lot of traction on the front hand to keep planning in lulls. Therefore, it also pulls less on the back hand in strong winds, while always maintaining a basic pull. Like this you sail more stable on the straight than with a wave sail, with more power, more pull and also more liveliness than with a freeride sail, but in comparison also somehow limited, if you want to pull the sail tight again, if the tension on the back hand decreases. The advantage in strong winds, when you get a gust: you can open it and it stays stable; the Torro becomes faster neutral than the average and becomes lighter in your hands, you feel more the OFF than the ON. This allows you to have fun in the waves as well as in Bump&Jump. In the wave it pulls forward and accelerates strongly in small waves, always with pull in the hands to guide the board. The GUNSAILS works well in the autopilot, it is easy to hold, easy to adjust and does not shake while sailing. The body of the sail provides a certain softness, pleasant in gusts, on choppy water, landings and during turns in the waves.

CONCLUSION: A super versatile sail with plenty of planing performance on the flat water as well as fun in the waves and at Bump&Jump. A very good compromise between power/performance and handling, if you choose the setting according to the use.

+: Versatile, control, lightness, neutral in the wave, softness, range of use
-: Some testers lacked some dynamism
