The GS-R is our stand out World Cup Racing Sail and embodies limitless performance and top speed. In close cooperation with our PWA Athletes Ben van der Steen and Finian Maynard, Sail Designer Renato has yet again succeeded to elevate the new GS-R into the next level of performance.

The main goal of the current development was to further improve the acceleration and optimize the GS-R’s low wind characteristics. To achieve that, the mast curve was slightly adapted to perfectly fit the batten configuration. The harmony of those two elements improves the reactivity of the leech and the profile stability. The optimization allows more efficiency while pumping, better acceleration in low-wind and the ability to keep the speed in gusty winds. The triple offset clew construction is repositioned and got adapted to the new mastcurve, gives improved power transmission, drive and control.

The square ply material in the top of the sail has been replaced with monofilm which improves the twist and supports the agility and lightness of the leech. Thanks to the intelligent material assembly concept we have saved weight through a higher percentage of monofilm but have not compromised our standards in quality and durability. To further improve weight and sail performance the GS-R is equipped with a prepreg carbon tube.

The GS-R 2018 announces the next step in the slalom and race discipline. It masters the demands of acceleration, top speed and drive like never before. Once again, our world cup racing sails demonstrate the dedication and perfection of our R & D team – sail development as good as it gets.

BATTEN MATRIX

The choice of the right batten setup with the correct batten type is a crucial point to influence and optimize the sail profile. In the GS-R we use up to 4 different tube batten diameters in order to create the aerodynamically perfect profile. Light 9 and 11mm tubes in the top area to control the twist and save weight, combined with slightly stiffer 14 and 16 mm tubes in the boom area to withstand higher sail pressures and secure the profile stability.

Image

GUNSAILS CAMBERS

Our cambers have outlying rolls which ensure easy positioning on the mast. Once in position, the rolls reduce the friction and allow an easier and softer rotation of the sail. We offer four different types of camber depending on the position they are used in the sail. Through the change of cambers and the correct adaptation of the spacers the sail can be modified to be used with an RDM instead of an SDM mast. The right spacer setup can also help to finetune the sail. You can find detailed instruction on our website in the support category.

Image

3D WING SLEEVE

The aerodynamically optimized mast sleeve, resembles the wing of an airplane and enables maximum power development of your sail. An additional line of kevlar warp laminate in the middle of the mast sleeve is working like an anchor, holding the 3D profile in its defined position. Therefore the center of effort stays always in its place and the sail continuously accelerates!

Image

KEVLAR STRETCH CONTROL

Through the selected use of kevlar warp laminate, we are able to precisely define the stretch properties of every sail. This leads to more response and a long lasting and stable sail profile. The light and unidirectional kevlar threads show very low stretch, even under highest loads. They are individually positioned in each sail to suit its range of application, leading to long lasting performance and sail characteristics.

Image

TRIPLE OFFSET CLEW

Three different clew positions enable maximum trim flexibility. The use of the upper clew will give you an ergonomic advantage in low wind, enabling the ideal lever to pump and plane through. The centre and lower clew lead to more control in mid to high winds. Through the correct use of the Triple Offset Clew your sail sets your centre of gravity into the perfect position to transform all your energy into speed.

Image

NEOPREN COVER

The boom opening is covered with a zipped neopren cover thus reducing air friction and improving overall aerodynamics. The cover also prevents water from entering through the boom opening what will help your waterstarts.

Image

TACK STRAP

The GS-R and Vector are equipped with the tack strap to further regulate the downhaul tension. Through an additional fixation point the bottom contour of the sail is perfectly held in place, thus enabling higher speeds and more performance.

Image

ZIPPER OPENING

The zipper opening in the mastsleeve allows easy access to the cambers, thus simplifying the rigging and enabling easy camber fine tuning through spacers.

Image

HD X-PLY

The new High Density X-Ply shows the highest thread density of our used materials. It combines the characteristics of the square ply with the ones of the regular x-ply. Together they form a highly resistant and durable material, which is light at the same time. HD X-Ply finds application in the upper panels of our wave and freemove sails. The area including the material is specifically designed to suit the range of the sail. The result is an especially stable and reactive leech construction.

Image

TENSION FRAME

The Tension frame forms a functional unit with the smart clew construction. It is built from multidirectional x-ply and framed with insignia. Therefore it can resist maximum stress levels. The Tension frame receives the force from the clew and distributes the tension with the additional warp lines into the sail. The layout of the tension frame is designed to support the individual profile of every sail. Conclusively the tension frame improves the response of the sail and increases the profile stability. It also ensures long lasting sail characteristics and improves the overall durability of the sail.

Image

SMART CLEW CONSTRUCTION

The Smart Clew Construction is based on the tension specific and precise alignment of different materials. The result is an extremely durable clew area without additional weight. Depending the sail the layout of the materials varies in order to suit the resulting tension lines in order to distribute the force from the clew, towards the Tension Frame into the sail. That helps to create more response, better profile stability and long lasting sail characteristics.

Image

MULTIDIRECTIONAL X-PLY

Multidirectional X-Ply is used in high stress areas. The thread layout shows a higher density of polyester yarn, thus making the material more resistant than the regular X-Ply. The additional vertical thread direction allows the material to take more tension and force in the critical tension line.

Image

X-PLY

X-PLY the all time classic of the reinforced laminates. It is light, stable and has a good transparency. Therefore it is used in the window area of the Wave-and Cross Over Sails. X-Ply also does withstand higher punctual stress. In case of a cut, the threads avoid further damage because they stop the cut from spreading through the window.

Image

SQUARE-PLY

The square ply is based on the same concept as X-ply material. However the threads are aligned in a 90 degree angle and the material offers a higher overall thread density. That allows us to reduce the thickness of the included monofilm to save weight, but ensure durability at the same time.

Image

DOUBLE LOCK SEAMS

Double Seams provide the most stable connection between panels or different materials. They find use in areas of high material tension and make your sail tough and durable.

Image

CROSS BATTEN CONCEPT

Mostly used on the flatwater range due to a lot of surface in the boom area. The longest batten of the sail starts below the boom area, crosses the boom line and ends above the clew. The crossing batten does stabilize the profile, which is extremely important in that area. Like that the sail is more effective in acceleration and pumping and has a more stable pressure point.

Image

SYMMETRICAL BATTEN SYSTEM

The alternate positioning of the battens on the back and the front of the sail leads to a more equalized tension- and weight distribution. This arrangement will provide you with the exact same sail feeling, independent of the direction you are riding.

WIND SPECIAL TEST 03-2018 / GS-R 7.1 (Choix des testeurs)

Image

THE QUEEN OF LONG DISTANCE

DESIGN: In cooperation with PWA riders Ben van der Steen and Finian Maynard and of course house designer Renato Morlotti, the GS-R 2018 is developing towards more depth in profile. The main work was to revise the luff curve and the batten arrangement.

ON THE WATER: The GUNSAILS remains in the same line as in previous years: the easiest to rig and adjust sail thanks to the perfectly positioned FRED trim mark, which makes initial adjustments easier. The first impression is surprisingly simple and light and this is also confirmed on the water. It starts planing quickly without overstraining the rider and even in the lower wind range it offers a lot of stability with a forward facing, increasing pull. Pump fanatics will probably be disappointed, because the sail starts and accelerates by itself, the profile does the work automatically. To maintain this efficiency, whether in early planing or light winds, it is enough to just let the sail do the job. With increasing wind the same image is obtained, the sail accelerates quickly without bumps or overpressure and reaches a speed that makes it one of the fastest of the group, whether downwind or upwind. Whether the wind is strong or weak, the profile remains very stable, the stability of the sailing is really amazing and allows you to concentrate on other aspects of surfing while always keeping everything under control. In the jibe, the GUNSAILS has also improved, with a perfect camber rotation and a smooth and efficient re start after the jibe.

CONCLUSION: The 2018 GS-R is very powerful, from the lower wind range to the top speed, without ever being exhausting or exaggerated. It is the most easily accessible sail in the group, whether in terms of settings, sailing or price. Our slalom testers, regardless of their level or technical equipment, have appreciated this sail especially for its general performance and simplicity.

+: Simplicity and performance

PLANCHEMAG SPECIAL TESTS 2018 / GS-R 7.8

Image

EXUBERANT ENERGY

The loose leech of the GS-R is pronounced and goes down to the bottom, where there is a deep profile. The outline has been reworked and a new material has been added to the top, you still have the choice between three clew eyelets.

ON THE WATER: It is a little heavier when not gliding, but with stable wind it pulls and accelerates strongly forward, with a lot of dynamics in profile. It feels very direct, you accelerate with every gust of wind, with a permanent propulsion. If you pull a little bit on the outhaul and also use the lower eyelet, it will be a bit easier to hold (for the lightweights).
The GS-R delivers a great performance in the middle wind range with stable wind on reach, downwind or upwind. When you release tension on the clew, the power increases, the board lifts and you perform even more in low wind. This is best when there is enough wind and flat water on a reach course, with strong acceleration thanks to the good valve work of the leech. It seems that the sail has become even better in the lower wind range. But it is not as comfortable in choppy water as the softer sails, so you can't always close 100% the sail on long tracks. It is full of energy, which is sometimes difficult to channel, so it fatigues you faster. As a bonus you have a great performance if you master this power pack, e.g. at constant wind. In the jibe it is a bit heavy but with correct camber rotation.

CONCLUSION: Well reinforced and with a hammer price this GS-R brings an increased speed and can keep up with the best on slalom and reach courses. It delivers its power very dynamically and explosively and shows very lively reactions, which we like especially on flat water.

+: Construction, price, power/planing ratio, acceleration, easily accessible performance, dynamics
-: A little more nervous with chops and gusts, you fatigue faster than with the average
